Reading has to be one of the most selfish forms of entertainment...but what a wonderful thing it is. I spent a lot of time overseas when growing up so I wasn't raised in front of a TV. Instead my sisters and I read a lot. We're all voracious readers. I tend toward mysteriers, thrillers, and historical novels but I'm open to just about anything depending on my mood.
I've been in a bit of a funk lately so I picked up John Irving's newest, "The Last Night in Twisted River". What I love about John Irving is his ability to set a scene and draw you in. His is not an easy read by any length...it takes time to get into his novels, but I'm finding it's hooked me.
I put John Irving right up with other America greats like Hemingway and Steinbeck...he is a skillful and adept author...wordy without being wordy in a bad way. Such a nice departure from what I called airport authors like James Patterson...If you've never read Irving, start with "The World According to Garp"...
